Carpet Cleaning Basics

A carpet adds to the aesthetic beauty of homes and there is a wide variety of options to choose from. Mostly, carpets are made of synthetic fibers like acrylic, nylon, wool, polyester, etc. They protect against accidents by serving as a cushion and therefore, preventing falls from becoming potentially harmful. It is because of this reason that families with babies or young children tend to prefer carpets. Carpets require thorough maintenance and care so that they can enjoy an extended life. Taking proper steps of carpet cleaning to ensure that it looks and feels beautiful for a longer period of time. Carpets can get easily stained and it is imperative to deal with the stain immediately so that the quality of the carpet does not get compromised.

Carpet cleaning requires three essential steps:

  1. Stain Removal
  2. Vacuum
  3. Steam Cleaning

Oil, ink, food, gum, wax, etc. can cause stains which can be removed using several cleaning products available in market aisles. However, certain home-made solutions work perfectly to help rid the stain.

The most popular of these are:

  1. 1 cup of warm water with ¼ tsp of a non-bleach laundry detergent
  2. 2 cups of water with 1 cup of white vinegar

The ideal time for dealing with stains is as soon as they occur. This is the core of carpet cleaning. Wet stains should first be blotted with a clean dry cloth. Next, a dry cloth should be immersed in the cleaning solution and the stain should be blotted such that there remains no more on the carpet. One should try to work their way inwards from the edges of the stain as this prevents the stain from spreading. After about 3-5 minutes, a wet cloth should be used to blot out the solution from the carpet. One thing should be kept in mind that if excessive detergent is used, it may find its way through the carpet to the floor underneath and cause damage to both the carpet and the floor.

Vacuuming helps in carpet cleaning and removing the dust and dirt that get deposited on the surface of the carpet through several means. Regular vacuuming, at least once a week, helps the carpet to stay clean, bright and hygienic. The areas which receive more traffic like the stairways and the hallways should be vacuumed more frequently.

Every year, carpet cleaning should be done by steam cleaning as this helps by restoring its brilliance. The process of steam cleaning involves the use of a water-detergent solution. This solution is sprayed with high pressure followed by a thorough vacuuming. Once this process is complete, it is important to let the carpet dry completely within 12 hours to prevent mold and mildew from growing. Consequently, it should be vacuumed and the furniture is placed.

Frequent carpet cleaning gives a clean appearance to an entire room; in addition, it feels soft and smells fresh. And what’s best… it will last longer.
